PSPF Release 2024 is live

The Department of Home Affairs launched a new iteration of the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF).

PSPF Release 2024 demonstrates the Australian Government’s commitment to ensuring the policy settings are appropriate for the contemporary threat environment to protect, deter and respond to the security threats and challenges facing the Australian Government.

Since its inception, the PSPF has enabled the secure delivery of government business. Building on this legacy, PSPF Release 2024 provides the Australian Government with a world-leading repeatable process to focus on addressing contemporary protective security threats.

PSPF Release 2024 represents the first in an annual series of releases. The policy was informed by extensive consultation with Australian Government entities, including the Government Security Committee, technical expert authorities and intelligence agencies.

For the first time, Australian Government security requirements directly address third-party risk management, foreign interference and the security of operational and emerging technology.

The key changes introduced in PSPF Release 2024 include:

  • Expansion of the protective security domains to include separate domains for risk and technology
  • Incorporating requirements to address contemporary protective security threats including supply chain security, third-party risk management, foreign interference and security of operational or emerging technology
  • Improving the accessibility and structure of the PSPF
  • Providing clear guidance on areas with low maturity or ambiguity within the PSPF
  • Shifting from a maturity to compliance reporting model to provide more accurate reporting data and enable more valuable analysis of security vulnerabilities.

The annual release cycle will ensure Australian Government security keeps pace with new and emerging security threats.

The Department of Home Affairs is establishing a PSPF assurance function to assist government entities to accurately report their security posture, identify vulnerabilities and implement a process of continuous improvement to uplift the security maturity of the Australian Government.

Security is everyone’s responsibility. Protecting the Australian Government’s people, information and resources both domestically and internationally is paramount. And the Australian public expects that government services are secure with effective systems in place to protect the data and information they manage.

The Department of Home Affairs continues to work with all Australian Government partners, industry and the wider community to transform our collective protective security.
